FQ FILMS TO SPONSOR QUEER FILM FESTIVAL AWARDS
FQ Films will sponsor the Audience Award for Best Film at both the 2009 Mardi Gras Film Festival (Sydney, Feb 19-Mar 5) and the 19th Melbourne Queer Film Festival (Mar 18-29).
Proudly owned and operated by Beyond Home Entertainment, FQ Films is Australia’s leading queer cinema label. Founded in 2005, the FQ DVD range has quickly become the largest and most popular collection of gay and lesbian cinema in the country, with over 75 award-winning and critically lauded titles in the catalogue.
The inaugural FQ Films Audience Award will be announced at the end of each festival. The awards will be judged by the general public, who will be encouraged to vote for their favourite film after each screening. A cash prize of $5,000 will be presented to the director of the winning film. “We’re absolutely delighted to be launching the FQ Films Audience Awards this year,” says Simone Ubaldi, Label Manager for FQ Films and Head of Acquisition for Beyond Home Entertainment, “The FQ label is a key part of the queer film landscape in Australia, and we are thrilled we can offer our support to the queer film festivals and filmmakers.”
Lex Lindsay, Festival Director of the Mardi Gras Film Festival, says “We've worked with FQ over the past few years to ensure Australian audiences have access, both in cinemas and at home, to the very best new queer films. I'm delighted FQ are sponsoring the award. Who better than Australia's major queer DVD label to be championing the voice of the people through an audience award at our festivals”
”FQ Films is a major supporter of queer cinema both locally and internationally, and have worked closely with the MQFF since 2005 to bring the highlights of our annual festival to Australian audiences, says Lisa Daniel, Festival Director of the Melbourne Queer Film Festival. ‘Without the contribution from FQ films many outstanding queer films would disappear without a trace. This new award cements their efforts in supporting quality queer cinema.”
Many of the films selected for Mardi Gras and MQFF in 2009 will find a home on the FQ Films label after their festival debuts, including Patrik 1.5 (Sweden), Were The World Mine (America), Mulligans (Canada), Antarctica (Israel) and Boystown (Spain).
